Life Style - Recreation and Leisure

Leisure time is time spent away from work and domestic chores.  It also excludes time spent on necessary activities such as sleeping.
Recreation is an activity of leisure. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement or pleasure and are considered to be fun.

Participation in leisure and recreation activities can help create a higher level of wellbeing.
A 2008 study in New Zealand found that the 10 most popular sport and recreation activities enjoyed by older people were walking, gardening, swimming, equipment-based exercise, bowls, fishing, golf, dance, callisthenics and cycling – 82% participated in at least one sport or recreational activity every week.

Visit the physical activity and exercise page for guidelines on physical activity for older people.

For ideas for leisure activities in your area contact your local Age Concern or local Council, or visit meetups.com. Meetup is the world's largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organise a local group or find one already meeting up face-to-face.

The latest adition of Age Concern North Shore's Calendar of Activities is now available. The Calendar lists social, recreational, support and exercise activities for older people on Aucklands North Shore.
